The MV Hebrides was launched and named by HM Queen Elizabeth II on the 2nd of August 2000, a first for CalMac. The MV Hebrides replaced the MV Hebridean Isles on the 24th of March 2001 due to the volume of traffic getting too high for it. Her introduction to the Uig Triangle shortened the journey time to 1 hour 40 minutes. The MV Hebrides became the MV Clansman's sister, they both have the similar specification. In 2003 during the MV Clansman's and MV Hebrides's annual overhauls they got extra open deck space added at the aft of the vessel above the open deck space that was already there. In 2007 during the MV Clansman's and MV Hebrides's annual overhauls they got converted to burn oil instead of fuel. The MV Hebrides is due to be replaced in 2019 by the new MV (Hull 802), which according to some is meant to be named the MV Claymore. This will allow the MV Hebrides to be transferred to Oban to assist its sister ship the MV Clansman with the Oban to Coll and Tiree service, the MV Isle of Mull with the Oban to Craignure service, the MV Lord of the Isles with the Oban to Lochboistale service and the MV Isle of Lewis with the Oban - Castlebay service.
