The MV Isle of Mull was launched and named by Princess Alexandria on the 12th of August 1987. The MV Isle of Mull replaced the MV Caledonia in the spring of 1988 due to the volume of traffic getting too high for it. During the MV Isle of Mull's 1988 annual overhaul it got split in two just forward of the funnel to add roughly an extra 5.4 metre piece of hull. This was done to solve a deadweight problem with the vessel. In 2015 there was a decision made that there should be extra capacity on the Oban to Craignure route, especially in summer. There were berthing trials with the MV Isle of Lewis to see if that was acceptable to run the route instead and for the MV Isle of Mull to move to Islay to assist the MV Hebridean Isles. It was decided that MV Isle of Lewis is unable to run the route, without modifications to its stern ramp. Since 2016 the smaller MV Coruisk has assisted the MV Isle of Mull, during summer.
