History

The MV Hebridean Isles was launched and named by HRH the Duchess of Kent on the 7th of April 1985, the first CalMac ship to be launched by royalty.

The MV Hebridean Isles was launched sideways, also a first for CalMac.

Before the MV Hebridean Isles was able to start on the Uig triangle it became a temporary vessel on the Oban - Craignure route, while linkspans were being built at the piers it was meant to serve.

The MV Hebridean Isles replaced the MV Hebrides (II) and MV Columba (winter relief) in the spring of 1986 due to the volume of traffic getting too high for it and they were getting too slow as they were primarily hoist loading.

The MV Hebridean Isles stayed on the Uig triangle 15 years until it got replaced by the MV Hebrides (III).

Since 2001 the MV Hebridean Isles has been on the Islay service and since 2003 it has been assisted by the MV Isle of Arran, although since 2011 it has been assisted by the new MV Finlaggan instead.
