The MV Clansman replaced the MV Lord of the Isles on the 4th of July 1998 due to the volume of traffic getting too high for it. This made calls en-route to Coll and Tiree from Oban to Tobermory no longer necessary and able to be done, this was because the berth at Tobermory isn't long enough for the 99m MV Clansman. In 2000 a new vessel was built to the MV Clansman's specification called the MV Hebrides, which is her sister. In 2003 during the MV Clansman's and MV Hebrides's annual overhauls they got extra open deck space added at the aft of the vessel above the open deck space that was already there. In the 2004 summer season a new journey was added once a week going from Oban - Coll - Tiree - Castlebay - Tiree - Coll - Oban, which went through Gunna Sound to get to and from Castlebay, which was trialed a year earlier by the MV Isle of Arran. In 2007 during the MV Clansman's and MV Hebrides's annual overhauls they got converted to burn oil instead of fuel.
