History

The MV Lord of the Isles was launched on the 3rd of July 1989.

Initially the MV Lord of the Isles had passenger berths, which were later removed.

The MV Lord of the Isles replaced the MV Claymore and MV Columba in the spring of 1989 due to the volume of traffic getting too high for them.

It also allowed the Oban to Coll and Tiree and Oban to Castlebay and Lochboistale routes to be combined and also allow the MV Glen Sannox (III) to be withdrawn from CalMac service.

The MV Lord of the Isles stayed on the Tiree, Castlebay and Lochboistale routes for 11 years until it got replaced by the new vessel MV Clansman.

On the Journey to Tiree, the MV Lord of the Isles would stop at Tobermory, this stopped once the MV Clansman took over.

From 1998 to 2003 the MV Lord of the Isles was on the Mallaig to Armadale service, replacing the MV Iona, until it was replaced by the new MV Coruisk.

Then from 2003 to 2016 the MV Lord of the Isles was back in Oban for the Oban to Castlebay and Lochboistale service, until it was replaced on the Castlebay route by the MV Isle of Lewis, which was replaced on the Stornoway to Ullapool route by the new MV Loch Seaforth.

Since 2016 the MV Lord of the Isles has been in Lochboistale for the Mallaig to Armadale and Mallaig to Lochboistale services, during winter doing the Lochboistale to Mallaig or Oban service and it would do the Oban to Colonsay service while in Oban.

These arrangements allows the MV Clansman to only do the Oban to Coll and Tiree routes.
