The MV Isle of Lewis was launched on the 18th of April 1995. The MV Isle of Lewis replaced the MV Suilven, as the volume of traffic was getting too high for it and the crossing time was too long. The MV Isle of Lewis managed to cut the MV Suilven's roughly 4 hour crossing time down to 2 hours and 45 minutes. The MV Isle of Lewis had to have her stern ramp off-set to the port side (left), so that it would still be able to load at Ullapool since she was so wide. From 2002 to 2013 the chartered in freight ferry MV Muirneag joined the MV Isle of Lewis for the Stornoway to Ullapool freight service. From 2013 to 2014 the freight ferry MV Clipper Ranger joined the MV Isle of Lewis instead. From 2015 the MV Isle of Lewis replaced the MV Lord of the Isles on the Oban to Castlebay route, when the new ro-ro car and freight ferry the MV Loch Seaforth replaced the MV Isle of Lewis on the Stornoway to Ullapool route.
